Origin
I started playing Metal Gear on the NES in 1993. Around the same time I was watching Escape from New York, Blade Runner, The Matrix, and anything else with that dark, noir, science-fiction future.
Computers talking back. Artificial intelligence. HUDs. Terminals. Machines with personalities. Cyberdecks.
I always wanted my own. Most of that was fiction then. The idea never left.
My background is engineering, not “software engineer first.” Programming (VBA, Python, C) was a tool. Around 2018 I got serious about ML and AI: XGBoost, TensorFlow, predictive maintenance: and AI stopped being something I only saw in games.
Building the thing I always wanted
OtaconsKeep is roughly three years of building, breaking, and rebuilding around one question:
What would the computer I always wanted look like if I could build it today?
Not another chatbot. A system: agents with roles and personalities, persistent memory, voice, automation, tools: something meaningful on the other end of the Codec.
That became OtaconsKeep: local models, memory, routing, home-lab infrastructure, and agents that work together. I don’t just want impressive demos. I want to know it works: then prove it. The how lives in Engineering. This page is the why.
Why make it public?
For a long time this was only my Keep. Then I realized other people might want their Keep: their agents, hardware, and automations: not a clone of mine.
So I turned it into something people can install. I’m documenting the broken installers and failed experiments too. That’s part of building it.
Still building the cyberdeck
Consumer GPUs, open source, and a home lab can now do things that seemed ridiculous when I was a kid.
More than thirty years after that NES, I’m still chasing the same idea.
I still want my cyberdeck. The difference is that now I can actually build it.
Welcome to the Keep.
