OtaconsKeep Lite is the free foundation (Default Model + Voice Trainer). KeepRoute, AI9, Keep Desk, and Expansion are all free with public install steps. No license, no seat.

Having trouble? First-install help
Normal things you may see
Windows protected your PC / SmartScreen
  1. Click More info → Run anyway.
  2. Expected for a new unsigned Setup file.
Administrator / “allow this app” (UAC)
  1. Click Yes. Setup needs permission for WSL and services.
  2. A second Setup window may open: that is expected.
Windows asks you to restart
  1. Normal while enabling WSL. Save work and restart.
  2. After reboot, Setup should show WELCOME BACK, or double-click the same OtaconsKeep-Setup.bat again.
Ubuntu asks for a username / password
  1. Windows is creating OtaconsKeep’s local WSL Linux environment.
  2. Choose any username and a password you will remember (needed later for sudo).
“Updates are underway, please keep your computer on”
  1. Windows is finishing Linux/WSL features: not an Otacon crash.
  2. Can take 15–45+ minutes. Drive activity usually means it is still working.
Setup stays on one step for several minutes
  1. Dependencies and AI models can be large. Leave the window open.

Something actually went wrong?
SETUP NEEDS HELP
  1. Recovery mode: not a silent crash. Press R to retry, O for logs, or X to exit.
localhost:5757 blank / broken
  1. Wait until Setup says OTACON IS READY, then open or refresh the address.
Installer file damaged / wrong encoding
  1. Delete the bad .bat.
  2. Re-download with the button above (or the GitHub ZIP fallback below): not browser Save As on a raw GitHub file.
'curl' is not recognized (manual path)
  1. Use the download button above instead, or try the PowerShell option under Manual → Windows.

If the browser blocks the download, use the GitHub ZIP, extract it, then run OtaconsKeep-Setup.bat from the folder. Do not Save As on a single raw .bat from GitHub.

Lighter install (skip chat model / voice trainer): put OTACON_INSTALL_DEFAULT_MODEL=0 and/or OTACON_INSTALL_VOICE_TRAINER=0 on the bash side of the pipe.

Manual install: step by step

Baby steps. No Linux knowledge required. Pick your computer first: then only those steps appear.

What are you using?

1 Check your computer
  • ✓ Windows 10 or Windows 11
  • ✓ About 10+ GB free disk space
  • ✓ Internet connection
  • ✓ Permission to install software (Admin / Yes when Windows asks)

You do not need to install Python, Git, Ubuntu, Ollama, or WSL yourself. Setup handles that.

2 Open Command Prompt
  1. Press the Windows key.
  2. Type cmd.
  3. Click Command Prompt.

You should see a black window. That is correct.

3 Copy and paste

4 Approve Windows

If Windows says Windows protected your PC:

Choose More info → Run anyway.

If Windows asks Do you want to allow this app to make changes?

Click Yes.

5 Let Setup run
  • Leave the Setup window open.
  • First installation can take 15–45 minutes.
  • Some steps may appear to stop moving while Windows installs components or downloads AI models: that can be normal.
  • Your PC may restart once. Restart normally. After Windows starts again, Setup should continue. If it doesn’t, double-click OtaconsKeep-Setup.bat again.
6 You’re done

2 Open a terminal

Press Super/Windows key, type terminal, press Enter. Or use your existing SSH session.

3 Copy and paste

  1. Click the terminal window.
  2. Paste (right-click, or Ctrl+Shift+V).
  3. Press Enter.
  4. When asked for your password, type it (nothing appears) and press Enter.
4 Wait, then open Otacon

First run often takes 10–30 minutes. When it prints http://127.0.0.1:5757, open that address.

1 Only if Guided Setup won’t run

Most Windows users should use the Download button on the left. Use this path only when you need to set up WSL yourself. The full WSL and Linux manual, with the errors, is Method 3.

2 Install Ubuntu (WSL)

Open PowerShell as Administrator, then run:

wsl --install -d Ubuntu

Restart if Windows asks. Open Ubuntu from the Start menu and create a username/password you’ll remember.

3 Run the Linux installer inside Ubuntu

Method 3

WSL or Linux manual, including the errors

Use this when you are installing OtaconsKeep Lite by hand on Ubuntu in WSL, or on an Ubuntu/Debian PC. The script is saved to a file first so you can read it before it runs. Supported releases: Ubuntu 22.04, Ubuntu 24.04, Debian 12.

1 Check Windows before WSL
  • Windows 10 (version 2004 or later) or Windows 11.
  • You can approve an Administrator prompt.
  • About 20 GB free on the Windows drive. The installer later refuses if the Ubuntu home filesystem has under 8 GB free.
  • Leave virtualization enabled. If WSL says the virtual machine platform cannot start, turn virtualization on in the PC's BIOS/UEFI, then retry.
2 Install Ubuntu for WSL

Open PowerShell as Administrator and run:

wsl --install -d Ubuntu
wsl --set-default-version 2
wsl --status
  1. Restart when Windows asks. That reboot is the WSL feature, not a failed install.
  2. Open Ubuntu from the Start menu. Do not continue in PowerShell.
  3. Create a username and a password you will remember. The password is invisible while you type. You need it for sudo.

If wsl --status shows version 1, run wsl --set-version Ubuntu 2 and open Ubuntu again.

3 Prove this window is Ubuntu 
cat /etc/os-release

You want Ubuntu 22.04 or 24.04. If this command is not found, you are still in PowerShell or Command Prompt.

4 Check memory, disk, and apt 
free -h
df -h "$HOME"
  • Under 4 GB RAM or under 8 GB free: the installer stops.
  • 8 GB RAM and 20 GB free is the comfortable size, because the chat model is large.

If apt later says it cannot get a lock, close any Ubuntu update window. From Windows PowerShell run wsl --shutdown, reopen Ubuntu, and continue.

5 Save the installer, then run it

Still inside Ubuntu, as your normal user (not root):

You can open install_otacon.sh in a text editor before the second line. When sudo asks, type the Ubuntu password. Nothing appears as you type.

Tight disk: skip the chat model and the voice trainer, then add them later:

First run is often 15–45 minutes. Leave the window open. Rerunning the same command is the recovery, not a second product.

6 Open Otacon

Open that address in the Windows browser. Bookmark it. It is only this PC.

Logs from this run: ~/.config/otacon/logs/ inside Ubuntu. Service: otacon.service.

1 Check the machine
  • Ubuntu 22.04, Ubuntu 24.04, or Debian 12. Desktop or server.
  • Your user can use sudo.
  • 4 GB RAM minimum, 8 GB comfortable. 8 GB free minimum, 20 GB comfortable.

2 Open a terminal on that machine

Use the machine's own terminal, or SSH into it. Do not run this from Windows PowerShell unless you are inside wsl. The WSL tab is the Windows path.

3 Save the installer, then run it

Run it as your normal user. sudo will ask for the Linux password for packages only. If apt cannot get a lock, wait for the other update to finish or reboot, then rerun.

Skip the large chat model when disk is tight:

4 Open Otacon

On this machine, that address is Otacon. Check systemctl status otacon --no-pager if it does not load.

If it stops, match the message
Wrong window or wrong Linux
This terminal isn't running Ubuntu or Debian
  1. You pasted the command into PowerShell, Command Prompt, or Git Bash. Those are not the installer window.
  2. Open the Ubuntu app from the Start menu, or a terminal on the Ubuntu/Debian machine, and run it there.
Unsupported OS / not Ubuntu 22.04, 24.04, or Debian 12
  1. Check with cat /etc/os-release.
  2. Those three releases are the supported ones. Other distros, including other Ubuntu versions, stop on purpose.
  3. OTACON_ALLOW_UNSUPPORTED_OS=1 continues anyway. Core's web UI may still fail. Treat that as unsupported, not as a fix.
sudo: password is invisible, or sudo is missing
  1. The password is your Ubuntu/Linux password. Nothing appears while you type. Press Enter.
  2. Do not run the whole installer as sudo bash. Run it as your normal user. It asks for sudo only for system packages.
  3. If the message says sudo isn't available, install sudo as root, or run the privileged phase as root. Do not grant NOPASSWD to all commands.
user phase must not run as root
  1. You started the script with sudo or as root. File ownership would be wrong.
  2. Close it. Open a normal user shell and run bash on the script again.
Packages stuck
apt/dpkg is locked, or "Could not get lock"
  1. Another update is running (Ubuntu Software or unattended-upgrades). Wait for it to finish.
  2. On WSL, from Windows PowerShell run wsl --shutdown, reopen Ubuntu, and rerun the installer.
  3. On a Linux PC, reboot if the lock does not clear, then rerun.
dpkg was interrupted / apt-get -f install failed
  1. The installer tries sudo dpkg --configure -a and sudo apt-get -f install -y by itself.
  2. If it still stops, the log names the package. Fix that package, then rerun the same installer. It is safe to run again.
  3. Repair log: ~/.config/otacon/logs/
A step timed out
  1. Usually apt mirrors, GitHub, or a sudo prompt nobody answered.
  2. Fix the network, then rerun the same command. The log path is printed in the error.
Disk, memory, and GitHub
Preflight failed (RAM / disk / network)
  1. Under 4 GB RAM or under 8 GB free in your home filesystem stops the install. 8 GB RAM and 20 GB free is the comfortable size. The chat model is the large part.
  2. Free space, or rerun with OTACON_INSTALL_DEFAULT_MODEL=0 to skip the chat-model download. Voice trainer can be skipped with OTACON_INSTALL_VOICE_TRAINER=0.
  3. If Windows can open GitHub but Ubuntu cannot, they are not the same network. Turn the VPN off, run wsl --shutdown from PowerShell, reopen Ubuntu, and test getent hosts github.com.
  4. On Windows 11, if that name still does not resolve, create %UserProfile%\.wslconfig with [wsl2] and dnsTunneling=true, run wsl --shutdown, and try again.
git fetch failed / cannot reach github.com
  1. This is the Linux or WSL network, not proof that Lite is missing.
  2. Same recovery as the preflight network failure above. Then rerun.
The page does not open
127.0.0.1:5757 is blank or refused
  1. Wait until the installer finishes. A blank page during download is normal.
  2. From Ubuntu: systemctl status otacon --no-pager and sudo journalctl -u otacon -n 80 --no-pager.
  3. If systemctl says systemd is not running, add this to /etc/wsl.conf and then run wsl --shutdown from Windows:

systemd=true
  1. Port 5757 already in use is usually a previous Otacon. The installer restarts otacon.service. Use the journal if it does not come back.
  2. Open http://127.0.0.1:5757 from the Windows browser too. Do not publish that port on your router.
nvidia-smi failed, or Codec says no GPU
  1. Core still installs. Spoken voice (Piper) can run on CPU.
  2. Genome Voice Trainer is optional and needs an NVIDIA GPU visible inside Linux.
  3. If Windows nvidia-smi works and Ubuntu's does not: update the NVIDIA driver on Windows, reopen Ubuntu. On the guided Windows path, Fix-Otacon-GPU.bat is the repair.

The same command is safe to run again. Install log: ~/.config/otacon/logs/. Still stuck: Discord.

Runs for free on your own machine. Never costs anything.

Local GPU manga colorization + Firefox reading extension. Covered under AI9 (OtaconsKeep family-adjacent). Does not require Lite Core. Same pattern as Otacon Setup: download one file from this site, double-click it. No Command Prompt. No ZIP required.

Saves as AI9-Setup.bat. Open your Downloads folder and double-click it. Approve the Windows prompt if asked. It installs Git Bash if needed, detects your NVIDIA GPU, and finishes the rest. Do not type the filename into Command Prompt.

Advanced / already cloned the repo?

From the extracted AI9 folder, double-click install_ai9.bat, or in Git Bash run ./install_ai9.sh. Same installer.

Download GitHub ZIP if you prefer a full checkout first.

3 Load Firefox extension
  1. Firefox → about:debugging#/runtime/this-firefox
  2. Load Temporary Add-on…
  3. Pick C:\opt\manga-colorizer\extension\manifest.json
  4. Reload after a full Firefox restart (unsigned add-on limit).

Server: https://127.0.0.1:5000/ (self-signed warning is normal).

4 If you see an error
'AI9-Setup.bat' is not recognized
  1. Don’t type only the filename. Use the left download (double-click) or Step 2’s full line.
SmartScreen
  1. More info → Run anyway.
Window flashes and closes
  1. Install App Installer / Git, then rerun Setup.
GPU / nvidia-smi failed
  1. Update NVIDIA driver, reboot, rerun Setup.
Extension gone after restart
  1. Reload via about:debugging (Step 3).
